Getting Started - Basic Watercolor Supplies

Thinking of taking the 30 Watercolors in 30 Days Challenge? If you are ready to get started in watercolors I have listed a few basic items that I use during my Watercolor classes.

Cotman Pocket Travel Watercolor Paint Set
Currently on Sale 54% off - $10.70
This is a great little starter kit that comes with a little detail brush. The pans are replaceable.

Arches Watercolor Block 140 LB Cold Press 20 sheets 9x12 Inch
I recommend the 9x12 - you can start small with 5x7 paintings but still try a larger 8x10 with these sheets. Make sure to stretch your paper the night before.

US Art Supply Artists Canvas Board with Cotton Surface 11 inch x 14 inch 2 Boxes of 3 Each -
These are great little portable board that I love to use to tape down my watercolor paper too.

Masking Tape,1/2"
Any good quality masking tape will do (cheap ones can tear your paper when pulling it off). Make sure that you use a mat over your paper before you tape off the area you plan to paint. I usually go 1/4 inch outside the matted area to make sure that when it's framed you don't show any unpainted areas.

Winsor Newton Artists Water Colour Sable Brush- One Stroke Flat 1 Inch
Okay, this is a very nice brush and it's not completely necessary, but if you feel like spoiling yourself I say go for it! Other wise a simple flat wash or oval brush will do. You can find them at A/C Moore or Michaels for under $10.00

"THE VISIT" - Red Cardinal Watercolor - SOLD

"THE VISIT"
8x10 Original Watercolor
2012
SOLD

Interesting story about this painting...

We all know that yesterday December 21, 2012, according to the Mayans, was to be our last day on Earth. Happy to know that it wasn't! So, with this info running around in my head I thought to myself, what would I love to do if indeed it was my last day on earth. Well of course number one is spend time with my loved ones, and secondly - Paint.  For some reason my thoughts keep returning to a red cardinal, and I looked for pictures a few days ago....with the urge to paint one.

So here is the interesting part - my husband handed out Christmas cards yesterday at work, and they happened to be my personal art cards.  One of his fellow co-workers asked if I had a red cardinal for sale! It had a lot of meaning to his family and he thought it would make a wonderful gift.

So yesterday, on my potentially last day on earth..... I painted that red cardinal.

One on One Watercolor Painting Session with Kellie Lynn Art

 KELLIE LYNN ART SESSION

Jen saw my piece on  THE GIANT STAIRCASE and wanted to do something on a smaller scale since Bailey Island was very close to her heart.

We set up an appointment to paint one on one this past Saturday and I want to thank her for letting me video tape our painting session. She was such a sport about it!

My husband Larry purchased me a new Nikon camera recently and it has High definition recording on it so I have been just waiting to try it out! Oh, not to mention he hooked me up with a full studio lightening system and heavy duty tripod! I love that guy. (Thank you darling! XOXO)

Hope you enjoy it....had to speed it up x4 in order to keep it under 10 minutes, but you'll get the idea!

Don't forget to subscribe to the new Kellie Lynn Art YouTube Channel - More demo paintings to come!

Interview with Maine Children's Author Pam Prevost and Artist Shelby Crouse

I was lucky enough to sit down with Pam and Shelby and a hot cup of gingerbread coffee today and speak about Pam's new book.

The Adventure of Charlie the Curious Cat and Me is an interactive book where children become the co-author. Pam has worked in the early childhood/youth development field as an educator for 20 years. She understands the importance of early reading and the book asks open ended questions that help the children write and draw along with the story.

Charlie is a curious and entertaining cat that is adopted from Mississippi and brought here to Maine. It's a wonderful story for educators and parents to use to promote a child's learning.

Hope you enjoy!

Giant Staircase - Bailey Island, MAINE Framed - SOLD

THE WAVE

"GIANT STAIRCASE" - Bailey Island, Maine

SOLD

This is my largest painting to date - a full sheet 22x30". Most of my work tends to be the smaller 5x7" but I'm trying to get out of my box.

I am super excited, because yesterday I dropped off "THE WAVE" painting to have it professionally framed at the Gallery. Really looking forward to seeing the results! oh yeah, I'll probably share it here when it's done, no twisting my arm!

Had them use a lovely antique frame from a Claude Montgomery painting that I sold recently. Unfortunately the original mat had been damaged and not to mention the client that purchased it lived far far away and this frame is huge and there fore, yep I'm going to go all Mainer on you;WICKED expensive to ship! So guess what....I kept it.

Took me about 30  minutes to figure out what color matting to choose, but finally settled on a lovely ocean spray green with an inside chocolate brown to pop out the color in the rocks. I think it'll  look extremely shabby chic! Went all out on this one - even got the special UV ray protection glass so that it won't fade the colors. If any of you have recently had your work framed professionally you know all to well the costs involved, but I think the out come will be well worth the investment.

Update: December  21st - This painting has been sold, but I may a others you may be interested in on my Daily Paint Works Gallery.

Client Request - Milkweed Blossom - SOLD

 Milkweed Blossom

SOLD

Simple Elegance, that's what I think of every time I look at this piece. The black background just pops the milkweed blossom off the paper. The client decided on a white mat and frame and I think it's a beautiful choice on this floral watercolor. Below is a picture of it framed.

I hung it up on my wall to take a picture of it, but as you may be able to tell the glass was left out so that I wouldn't get a major glare.

I used
Winsor Newton Cotman Sketchers Pocket Box Set which is on sale currently for only $9.00 on amazon, and Winsor Newton Gouache 37ml Ivory Black

to get a nice deep background color.

They currently have a nice
Winsor Newton Designers' Gouache - Primary Set of 6, 14 ml set
of primary colors of gouache too. Makes a great gift set for the holidays!
