VIDEO "Birds Eye" - Watercolor Demo Speed Painting

Hopefully you will enjoy this new video. I painted a cardinal last week and a few of you were wondering how you can bring the eye to life. It's really all about the reflections.

This video is a speed demo with music, but I am planning on putting together more instructional video's with voice so that I can walk you step by step through the process if you wanted to follow along.

More coming soon, so make sure to sign up for my newsletter!

"Sweetness" - SOLD

 "Sweetness"

SOLD

  5x7 Watercolor/Gouache on 140 Arches Cold Press

Daily Painting #43

Ok, I'm totally digging this loose painting style! This cute little rabbit is hiding in amongst the wildflowers and sweet smelling grasses. He doesn't think we can see him...but we can.

Good news...the first day of spring was yesterday although I'm not sure Mother Nature was in tune with that, she dumped another 8-10"'s of snow on us!

Here's to spring  and cute and fuzzy bunnies!

"THE CARDINAL" - SOLD

  "THE CARDINAL"

SOLD

  5x7 Watercolor/Gouache on 140 Arches Cold Press

Daily Painting #42

Always playing with paints and styles even after 20 years...guess it never gets old with me. This is a looser style painting. I lightly sketched in the Cardinal and used a very wet on wet technique on the outside of the bird first.

This kind of painting is very fun for me....love freedom and lack of restriction it gives me. I'm free to explore and play...just like a kid.

Once the background was done I started some detailing on the bird. Here comes my problem...I like details and find it hard to just leave it alone...think you may of heard me say this before if you have been reading my blog for a little while now.

A big thank you to a fellow artist Karl from Watercolor Journal. We chatted a bit on facebook yesterday and I just love his style.....he encouraged me to give it a try!

Happy Painting

15 minute Painting - Quick Study

"Spot of Tea" - 15 Minute Quick Study

Funny me....not sure if all the artists do this, actually I'm pretty sure most of us don't. I post just about everything I paint whether I'm happy or not with it. Not all paintings are fabulous and ones that we are in love with right? So why do I post them? Because sometime not perfect is perfect for someone!

I've found it very comforting to hear other artist's feel that unsure feeling. Guess it's just ingrained in us. I know that I crave that positive creativity in my work.

We get caught up in the creation of a piece but sometimes on paper it isn't what we planned for it to be, but you know what? We paint, we have fun, and we leave our mark on the world...isn't that what its all about?

Today's challenge for me was to do a quick study, well I'm not really sure if you call it a quick study if you don't actually look at something to study. But in any case here it is...my spot of tea! Done without any references and you know what...that's not easy to do! It's great training for our brains!

Practice, Practice, Practice!

"Autumn Sail"- Original Watercolor - SOLD

   "Autumn Sail"

   5x7 Watercolor/Gouache on 140 Arches Cold Press

SOLD

Growing up in Maine along the ocean I relaxed and took in the incredible views that the coast had to offer. Sailing was by far my favorite way to travel. We would sail into all kinds of magical coves.

Maine Lupines - New PartyPainter Hostess Scene

I just posted these three Maine Lupine watercolor paintings as new scene choices for my business called PartyPainter!

Although I 'm an artist it still amazes me how much the differences in color really make! I was thinking these flowers would be beautiful all hanging framed above my bed.

Don't forget to check out our other scene choices on the PartyPainter Facebook Fan Page - we would love more fans!

"Hello World" - Spring Chick Hatching - Watercolor

   "HELLO WORLD"

  5x7 Watercolor/Gouache on 140 Arches Cold Press

Daily Painting #41

Since Easter is just around the corner I was ready to paint something springy!

Though you all may be interested as to how I picked the name....
My son  Camden was working with his dad on the computer last night and Larry was teaching him how to code in HTML. He had downloaded the program - Kids RUBY for him to play with. By the way, what a great little program for kids, I would highly recommend it!

So sweet to watch them....Larry was being all nostalgic...reminiscing about his first programming experience as a child and telling Camden all about it.  Telling my age here, but we went to school in the 80's ...do you all remember "Hello World"?

I thought about naming it The Escape, or Peeking Out, but last nights cute little son and dad time took me back to HELLO WORLD! :)

DownEaster Quick Study - Brunswick Station, Maine

   "Downeaster - Brunswick Station"

  11x14 Watercolor/Gouache on 140 Arches Cold Press

Daily Painting #39

After painting a lot of little details on the last painting Autumn Reflections,  I had to take a few days off from painting. Having those blahs...wishing the spring would come!

Decided to work on a quick study today of Brunswick Station. I'm listening to the train blow it's horn while I'm posting! I could definitely work more of the details on it! Different than my other work...the plan was to do a quick study - on this one getting only what I could get done in an hour. The front has a lot of details and shading with a detailed hitch in the front...lots of metal and shapes...so I opted to leave them out in this one.

Special thanks to one of my favorite Maine photographers,  Benjamin M. Williamson for the reference photo!

Grumbacher Miskit - Liquid Frisket - my new bottle!

If you saw my post last week when I painted the birch trees Magical Place you may remember my bad mood due to the frisket thing not going so well.

Did a little bit of research and thought Grumbacher Miskit would be the way to go, so I placed the order the other day on Amazon and it came quickly, super excited to try it out today. Will let you know how it goes, wish me luck!

Painting Number 38 "Autumn Reflections"

   "Autumn Reflections"

  11 x 14 Watercolor/Gouache on 140 Arches Cold Press

Just want you all to know that I was so scared to show you all the original photograph! As I'm creating the post (such a typical thing I hope) I'm analyzing the painting more and seeing a few more things I could change. But I am going to leave it alone, I promise!

I wanted to step out side of my comfort zone with a few larger paintings this year and Autumn reflections was a challenge for me. Not only is the size larger than my norm, but there is a lot going on in this one. When I first looked at the photograph I had no idea how difficult it would be to achieve the look I wanted. Took me longer than what was anticipated, but very happy with the outcome.

My cousin Valerie sent me the original photograph via Facebook. She thought it might be  something that I would enjoy painting - Thanks Valerie....you were so right! I love it when folks send me interesting pictures!

 ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH BY CANDI

So here's the original photograph taken by Candi at the Tower Hill Botanic Garden in Boylston, MA. She certainly has an eye! This is just so cool! Love the warm reflections in the water. You can see the leaves drifting along..no care in the world.

I'm off to drift along and enjoy my family time.......enjoy your weekend everyone!
