PATRON - 10x17" Original Watercolor

"PATRONS OF THE SEA"
 10 x 17" Watercolor

Finished my latest watercolor today. Really loved painting the colored glass. Looking for all the variations of blues and greens and yellows - it's amazing how many different shades you can make by using 3 colors.

I enjoyed it so much I may do a series of them. We'll see.....

Working on Colored Bottles - My Progress

My Progress:

Just started a new 11x17 watercolor painting and it has the most gorgeous colors!  I have to admit, this piece makes me happy just painting it!

So here's the story behind it....My mother and father have been snow birds...resting in Florida for the entire Maine winter. Lucky them huh! It's been a little hard for me (whining just a little here) because my mother and I usually paint together. I've really missed having my gal pal here you know. You too Dad (of course)!

The other day we decided that we should at least have some fun together by working on the same painting, even though we are in separate states. Have any of you ever tried google hangout? Gotta love it...we can paint and share our work right here on line via video chat. It's perfect really.

Mom took a number of photos in the beautiful Florida scenery before we agreed on "THE ONE". She wasn't too happy because she had to haul a number of Patron bottles (aka Ta-kill-ya) filled with water and food coloring down to the beach to get this shot. Bet she was pretty happy drinking them though! Ha! Kidding...no not really!

More progress to follow - tomorrow!

Maine River Rocks - 8x8" On clayboard

 Maine River Rocks

My first step was to transfer my drawing to the Clayboard then I layered a first wash on the rocks. Had fun with the different colors.

After the first wash of colors were down I added in a few more layers of glazes and added some texture.

Last step was to paint in the dark background and then add a water wash over the top with white goauche to give them an appearance of being underwater.

"Koi" Watercolor on 8x8 Clayboard

"Koi" 8x8 Watercolor on clayboard

Koi Fish are such beautiful creatures, and they can grow up to 2 feet long!
In Japan the meaning behind a Koi Fish is that they bring good fortune and luck or perseverance in adversity and strength of purpose.

I used a new watercolor canvas called

This is the first time I have painted on Aquabord - and I found it extremely fun. Although....I'm such a horrible direction's reader. You are suppose to wet the board first to remove any air bubbles. I didn't...but I was lucky it turned out okay. I did wet the area I was painting before I layered in the paint, so that's probably why.

Tulip Whispers - Choosing Mat Colors

Black Matting

White Matting

I have the hardest time choosing Mat colors and frames for my work. Guess it's such a personal thing. I know that a lot of artist will let the client pick..good idea huh! I decided to post both for you to look at.

Funny when I posted my newest painting of  "Tulip Whispers" on Daily Paint Works I noticed a number of Tulip painting on there for today....guess we artists are in a similar SPRING mood today.

"Apollo" - SOLD

Apollo is in the middle of a nor'easter!

SOLD

This painting of Apollo was completed all in Gouache paints instead of my normal watercolor's and it was so much fun! The paint certainly flows a lot different with gouache than with watercolors, but I really love the opaque nature of it.

Black and white monochromatic style with the exception of the eyes. I used a great starter set of
Winsor Newton Designers' Gouache,  on 140 Arches Cold Press paper, and only a small handful of brushes.

Right Brain - Use your imagination in this fun watercolor style!

$60.00 + Shipping

Today's Daily Painting #44 (Year To Date 2013) was fun and unexpected. I was excited to video tape the progress and hope to put the video up once I get the editing done on it.

My first step was to use clear plastic wrap to create a fun and interesting design and then go from there.

It's never been a challenge for my brain to see something in the color patterns. You have to use your imagination or your right brain for this exercise. Look for a pattern in the colors. It may be difficult at first, but with practice you can get the hang of it.

I remember as a kid sitting down just starring at the wood panels on a wall.....if you looked at the knots in the pine you could see all kinds of interesting little things....eyes...creatures, fairy's....my imagination would go wild.

So try it out and use your favorite colors and see what you get. If you can't see anything...show a little one...they are really good at spotting things! Then start to paint them in.
