Shooting Stars - Chinese Lanterns White Purity, Wisdom

You all know about those beautiful Chinese lanterns that are released into the night sky over the water? I somehow manage to paint these abstracts paintings and begin to see images in them. I had to look up the Chinese lanterns because this is what developed for me while painting.

Come to find out the white Chinese lanterns are a symbol of purity, old age and wisdom. My mother always said I had an Old Soul.

Underwater Life Ocean Creatures

Have you ever been to the tropics diving under water?

My son recently went on a trip to the Bahamas and came back to tell me all his wonderful stories of his underwater fun. He has an incredible imagination and from his words I created this piece.

What an excitement and thrill of seeing all those little living creatures hiding underneath the seaweed and coral of the ocean? Many of these tiny creatures can barely been seen by the naked eye...but are so very important.

Pure Passion Of Color - Sunset

Has anyone really ever seen a sunset like this one?  The fun thing about my creative emotions with ink art, they are a pure passion of color. What do you feel when you look at this vibrant red and black sky?

For me it was warmth. It evokes a strong emotion of Love, after all Red is the color of passion! A passion for the holidays...my favorite time of year.

Everyone Loves A Sunset

The snow is coming down outside my window this morning and it's breathtaking, but I'm a total winter windower! Meaning, I don't like to go out in the cold, but rather look at it's frozen beauty from on the other side of the window... from inside my nice and toasty home that is.

The sunset's have been beautiful lately and this ink painting was inspired by the bright red/orange and purple one I saw just the other evening. It was cold and the water behind our house has just started to freeze around the edges.

Grasshopper - Mr. Hopper Finished!

We found a giant yellow and green grasshopper sitting on top of a bucket of water, so I grabbed my camera and started snapping some pictures! I was so afraid he was going to jump at me that most of my photo's were blurry!

It amazed me how this creature had so many colors and small details. I really enjoyed my painting process. It took me off and on over a few months to finish.

Mr. Hopper - size 22x15" The background has been left white.
You can view the purchase information HERE.

I worked with Photoshop for the first time! It's a whole new world for my prints! I changed out the background for the cards and prints because the card stock is white and the original painting background is white...but looks gray when copied.

With the help of my wonderful, smart, and talented husband, Larry we managed to cut out the image and place new background colors for him to be printed on. Now the question is what colors do I chose? Had the same problem deciding on my Blue Lobster!

Blue or green would look so cute in a childs room. These are my sons favorite colors so I started with them. But I am going to try red, purple, pinks, orange....could go on forever!

The cool thing is that you can potentially create anything for the client now to match their space.

Learned to Make Peacock Feathers with Ink!

Working with Inks has been such a fun new experience for me. I've been manipulating the abstract paintings by turning them while the ink dries. You can get some really cool effects and they have some of the brightest colors.

Before the ink completely dries...you can use brushes to get the inks to move and create some interesting textures and patterns.  Here I used a small brush to give the appearance of feathers.
It can be tricky... .and you never know what you'll come out with!

What is YUPO Paper?

More with Alcohol inks on yupo paper!

What is yupo paper? I know....I kept hearing about it but wasn't really sure what it was until now. I found it the best to use alcohol inks on. It's the only paper that doesn't absorb or allow the inks to dry too quickly.

Here is a great description by Legion Paper - Yupo: They sell it in all sizes and weight.

Description

A synthetic paper is born. And it is a watercolor paper that repels water. Yupo gives visual artists an amazingly beautiful canvas to work with. Its smooth, bright white finish gives artists a medium that always goes big.

Painting on the slick surface of Yupo is different than regular watercolor paper and requires some adjustments. The artist can wipe back to regain the white of the paper, making it an excellent surface for beginning watercolorists. Or it can also be a very exciting paper for more advanced and experimental artists.

Yupo - a slick, smooth, nonabsorbent paper that dramatically changes the way you paint. Using this sheet, you can capture nuances, patterns, and shapes that previously escaped you.

What makes it even more unique is its lifting quality. You may return when a painting is done and redo it again and again. You can build up layers of paint, like an oil painter, and then take them off to reveal the white of the paper, like a watercolorist. Working with Yupo brings you a new passion for its infinite possibilities.

Yupo is a space age material made in a space age paper mill. The raw materials arrive by rail and are loaded into their respective silos and hoppers for their eventual transformation into pellets. These pellets are then fed into the patented heating and extruding equipment.

The base and surface layers are formed during the extruding process, and these three layers are stretched to create a dimensionally stable, biaxial-oriented substrate. The innumerable micro-voids created through this process give Yupo its superior strength, opacity and ultra-smooth surface finish. Every phase of the manufacturing process is computer controlled and closely monitored to ensure adherence to what many acknowledge to be the most stringent quality standards in the industry.

Little Free Library - Honored to Paint A Side!

I was so excited to receive a facebook message from my friend Elizabeth the other day!

Here's her note to me:

"I have built a "Free Little Library"  and I am asking artist friends to volunteer their time/talent to decorate the exterior. It has the theme "4 seasons" and a friend of mine has already painted "autumn" on the front and "winter" on the back. The sides still need the remaining two seasons. Would this interest either/both of you?"

SURE - I would be honored to!
 It's a great idea ... I looked it up - so cool!

What is a Little Free Library?

It’s a “take a book, return a book” gathering place where neighbors share their favorite literature and stories. In its most basic form, a Little Free Library is a box full of books where anyone may stop by and pick up a book (or two) and bring back another book to share.

She sent me a picture and I couldn't wait to get my hands on it! She was kind enough to drop it off to me at the HBS craft Fair last weekend and I just finished it up today.

She planning on putting it on a post outside - I hope to get a picture of it once it's all up!

How To Make Hand Made Gift Tags

This is the best little tool for making the cutest little hand made gift card tags for your gifts, crafts, or art! It really gives a nice professional look. Perfect for the holidays too!

It's called the Clever Lever Corner Craft Punch. They have many versions.
It cuts the corners with a nice finished edge and stamps out a little design flair. This one looks like a little wave, but they have snowflakes, squares, clouds... really anything you can imagine.

For this particular gift card I used an sheet of acid free linen paper, but you can use any kind of paper in any color and in any size! I cut the paper to match the size I want first, then fold and punch the corners.

Punch a hole in the corner, add some ribbon or string and ta-dah!
You may have seen yesterday's blog post on some hand painted ornaments...I used the gift tags there too. (So you can see another size and paper)

Hand Painted Ornaments Perfect Holiday Gift

I've been meaning for years to paint some handmade ornaments, and finally did! I think they make such wonderful little gifts for those folks you have no idea what to buy.

I purchased a box of 10 clear ornaments and painted little snowy blue holiday trees on them with acrylic paints. Tied a ribbon on the top and packaged in a clear bag. The little tags are a cute added touch too. I'll be posting how I made those tomorrow. They are WICKED easy to make!

Sailors Delight - Acrylic on Stretched Canvas

Red skies at night...sailors delight...if you have ever sailed you may remember that one.
Another abstract with acrylics today.

The size is 16x20 and the sides have been painted to match the flow of the painting.

Kept debating if I wanted to add some distant islands or rocks, but I'm going to sit on it for a little while...and ponder.
