Original Watercolor 5x7"

Purchase or more information Here

Look who made an appearance finally! Happy dance! It's really sad to think that I've been tossing these out for years each time after they bloom. Then a friend told me a little secret that I'll share....once the old flowers drop and the stem has dried up, cut it off from the bottom and a new shoot will start!!! Never again will I toss my Orchid!!

This is my original Photograph that I took as Grace was beginning to open again. She now has 4 open full blooms.

Day 11 of 30 in 30 "Storm Clouds" Maine Watercolor Mini

Storm Clouds
Maine Watercolor Mini

I've been painting a lot of local scene's for the Portland International Jetport or PWM
for this challenge. As folks are leaving the beautiful state of Maine they love
to take a treasure home with them and the mini's are the perfect travel size!

Listening to the stories of how much people really enjoy Maine makes me think that
I really need to see more of it. We have so many little sweet spots it's hard to get to them all isn't it.

Our vacationers don't want to leave, and really...can you blame them? Every turn you take... is a painting.

Day 8 of 30 in 30 - Isles of shoals, Maine Watercolor

Isles of shoals
Mini Watercolor 4x6" Mat

Still working on the mini's this month.

As a young teenager we would go sailing of the coast of Maine and I remember all the wonderful little spots along the rocky coast. As a girl born and raised in the Potato county aka Presque Isle seeing the coastal shores was amazing to me.

I can remember the first evening in Bar Harbor, we rowed out to the sailboat at night with our dinghy filled to the brim. With the first stroke of the oar the water lit up with what I became to know as Bioluminescent Dinoflagellates.

"If you have visited the ocean and witnessed the water at night, you may be pondering this question. The first scientist to document observations of glowing water was Anixinemenes in the year 500 B.C. He described light emitted by the sea when it was struck with an oar. Light in the ocean has been observed thousands of times since; these “mysterious glowing things” may even be responsible for some of the ghost stories told by sailors who witnessed the glowing waters but did not know the cause. Sightings of aerial bioluminescence have been documented; it appears the sky is glowing. It is assumed that bioluminescent particles are somehow carried into the air from the ocean, but no evidence has been found. Theories as to what is responsible for the things that glow at night have been proposed and many scientists have tried to unravel this mystery. The mystery has not been completely solved, but science is closer to discovering the truth." Allison Miller

Dinoflagellates:

"Dinoflagellates are the most common source of bioluminescence and are also known as Pyrrophyta or fire plants. Dinoflagellates are unicellular protists and are usually planktonic- ninety percent are marine plankton. They are small; many are microscopic, although the largest, Noctiluca, is 2 mm in diameter. Dinoflagellates are motile and swim by two flagella, which are movable protein strands. The longitudinal flagella extends from the sulcal groove at the posterior part of the cell and is responsible for the cells forward movement. The flattened flagella extends from the cingulum groove around the equator of the cell and provides the dinoflagellate with the ability to maneuver. Because of these two flagella, the dinoflagellate spirals when it moves."

SOLD - Day 7 of 30 in 30 Sailing in Rockland, Maine

SOLD
ACEO - Rockland, Maine

Since I"m working on a larger commission painting I'm sharing another mini today!

I've had a lovely weekend of rest with the family. It was our 17th wedding anniversary, so we relaxed most of the weekend. We went out to eat and got some Seadog Blueberry beers for me!  Even took my 13 year old to see the Minons movie, yep my first one and I have to admit...it was pretty cute.

Since it's the last bit of summer I"m squeezing in here and I'll be taking off Monday too!

Hope you have a great Labor Day.

Waking up to a beautifully crisp apple picking kind of day, with a sun filled view gazing over the fields.

It's Day 6 of the 30 in 30 challenge - the first week is almost complete. It's been great painting daily , it certainly helps gain some inventory for the holiday season! This painting was inspired by the cool morning today. It's now September and I know that fall is coming soon. It's one of my favorite times of the year. Our family will soon be making our way to the local apple orchard for the fresh apple and pumpkin doughnuts.

Good Morning!

A Special Touch - When Clients Frame Their New Art

One of my VIP clients purchased her childhood home last year, and her family has been remodeling it from top to bottom. I just couldn't wait to see the final touches. She sent me these pictures of her new art all in their new home.

I can't express how special I feel when my clients share what they've done with their new pieces! I get all giddy, just like a little kid when I see how wonderfully they frame the art; it's with such love and detail.

It's just amazing to see the painting complete and the feeling the art evokes once in a home! Isn't this just beautifully done? Thank you for sharing it Laura!
