Rangeley Maine Lupine Fields Acrylic Painting

Second painting of the lupine fields in Rangely Maine. Guess I just can't get enough of the these gorgeous flowers.

I had the sweetest email from a gentleman that had seen a watercolor of lupines I painted a while back. He wanted to share a story with me about how he and his now wife were backpacking and he picked her a bouquet of Lupines and proposed to her with them in hand.  Awe.... He wanted to get her a Lupine painting to remind her of their special day for their 10th Anniversary.

Rangeley Maine Lupines - 8x8 Acrylic on Canvas

Rangeley Maine Lupines
8x8 Acylic on Gallery stretched canvas

 *Canvas edge is painted black
One of the most spectacular views of Lupine Blooms happens each June and in my opinion one of the best place's to view this event is in Rangeley Maine. I promise you.... the site is amazing!
These flowers stand up to 3 feet tall and the site is incredible when you come across a large field of them.

Large Oil Painting of Five Island, Georgetown, Maine

Five Islands, Georgetown Maine Oil Painting
A Beautiful Day in Maine

Here's what I've been up to - I bought some new Winsor Newton Water Mixable Oils last week and painted an oil painting, size 24x36" on a Gallery Stretched canvas!

I was so excited to start because my mother came to paint with me! I've missed her (and you too dad)... they just got back from being snow birds in Florida. I picked up double everything for her for Mother's Day so we could create together.

What a big difference painting with oils....it's been such a long time since I've worked with them! The Water clean up make's them so much easier....and hardly any smell.

Why I Photograph the Painting's Progress - Squirrel Point Lighthouse, Maine

https://www.etsy.com/listing/187513346/squirrel-point-lighthouse-maine-original

https://www.etsy.com/listing/187513346/squirrel-point-lighthouse-maine-original

Took a break from working with Alcohol Ink on Tiles an went for a larger
9x12" AI painting of Squirrel Point Lighthouse here in Bath Maine on Yupo paper.

Here's a hint that I like to use when I'm painting buildings such as a Maine Lighthouse or animals. Take pictures of your progress as you go! When I'm unsure of when and where to stop I find it best to photograph the painting and take a step back.

Once the photo of the painting is taken, I download it to my computer and view it on my screen.
Sometimes I'll post my steps on Facebook too.

It really gives your eye a break and you can see things you didn't see before.

If you look at the bottom right hand side of the lighthouse in the second picture here, you can see it's off slightly. I also decided that the rocks need a bit more details for my taste.

Another great way is to see opportunity area's is to hold your painting up to a mirror and look at the reverse image.  It helps you see where lines just don't look right...they may be a bit off or need a slight adjustment.

Eiffel Tower - Commission Alcohol Ink Painting on Tile

A friend of mine from High School sent me a message on facebook the other day - she had seen one of my tiles and wanted to know if I could paint something special for her daughter's room. I was excited to start!

Her decor had shades of pinks, purples, and black so she wanted to have something painted with those colors in mind along with the Eiffel Tower. She loved the background I had done on one of my dragonfly tiles so I tried to duplicate it as close as I could!

The first go around was just with the tower, but it looked a bit lonely so after a bit of back and forth emails and a bit of research online we decided to add the moon, stars and a few trees in front!

We had a winner - she loved it....so I was off to the next step of varnishing and sealing the tile when disaster struck! I'm still not sure how this happens sometimes....but the sealing process on occassion will do funny things and it ruined the top right hand color in the tile. I was so upset!!

I tried to re-work it, but with inks that isn't something you can really do with the background once it's dried. The inks will re-activate and it changes the whole look!

So I started over...... here is the finished result (all sealed and ready to go).

Getting Fine Details with Alcohol Ink

You Can Detail AI Paintings

I've tried an Owl before with inks when I first started and it just didn't cut it. I've learned how to manipulate the inks better since first starting out with them in October of 2013.

With the help of a number of wonderful Ink artist's sharing wonderful tips and best practice's.....it's been a smoother transition than I thought!

How To Detail with Inks
With most of my work I use a fine watercolor brush to get these tiny lines. Pour a few drops of ink into a pallet or small dish and wait for a few minutes until the ink settles or thickens a bit. It's much easier to control the "explosion" of blur if the alcohol has evaporated slightly!

White is always the hardest to use with a brush. I found that I love using the Uni-ball' Signo gel pen in white.

Heads up....The white doesn't always stay bright white, you can see where It's yellowed a bit, especially where you are going over an existing color numerous times.

Art Glass Made Into Key Rings

My latest creations with Alcohol Inks are these adorable Key Chain Rings. I hand painted the 1" glass cabochon then sealed them with a coat of varnish and then a coat of UV spray.

They are attached on the back with a glued on bail and then I added them to Lobster Clasp Key Ring.

Cute huh! I've just listed them on my Etsy Store for $9.95!

Baxter Pet Portriat Steps in Progress

Baxter is the cutest name for this adorable little Chocolate Labrador!

Step 1 - First a few light washes

Next I like to start on the eyes, they make the painting!

Now it's time for more shading.

Once I get the shading in I felt it needed more highlights.
You can remove watercolor paint by lifting it out with clean water and a brush.

Some final detailing and whiskers (I used white gouache for them).

What is YUPO Paper?

More with Alcohol inks on yupo paper!

What is yupo paper? I know....I kept hearing about it but wasn't really sure what it was until now. I found it the best to use alcohol inks on. It's the only paper that doesn't absorb or allow the inks to dry too quickly.

Here is a great description by Legion Paper - Yupo: They sell it in all sizes and weight.

Description

A synthetic paper is born. And it is a watercolor paper that repels water. Yupo gives visual artists an amazingly beautiful canvas to work with. Its smooth, bright white finish gives artists a medium that always goes big.

Painting on the slick surface of Yupo is different than regular watercolor paper and requires some adjustments. The artist can wipe back to regain the white of the paper, making it an excellent surface for beginning watercolorists. Or it can also be a very exciting paper for more advanced and experimental artists.

Yupo - a slick, smooth, nonabsorbent paper that dramatically changes the way you paint. Using this sheet, you can capture nuances, patterns, and shapes that previously escaped you.

What makes it even more unique is its lifting quality. You may return when a painting is done and redo it again and again. You can build up layers of paint, like an oil painter, and then take them off to reveal the white of the paper, like a watercolorist. Working with Yupo brings you a new passion for its infinite possibilities.

Yupo is a space age material made in a space age paper mill. The raw materials arrive by rail and are loaded into their respective silos and hoppers for their eventual transformation into pellets. These pellets are then fed into the patented heating and extruding equipment.

The base and surface layers are formed during the extruding process, and these three layers are stretched to create a dimensionally stable, biaxial-oriented substrate. The innumerable micro-voids created through this process give Yupo its superior strength, opacity and ultra-smooth surface finish. Every phase of the manufacturing process is computer controlled and closely monitored to ensure adherence to what many acknowledge to be the most stringent quality standards in the industry.
