Art Tags - Perfect for Retail Shops and Craft Fairs

If you have taken an online course with me (Course Sale Links Below) on Pendants and are thinking about selling your work at craft fairs or online at Etsy, let me share with you my easy way of creating some retail shop tags for your Alcohol Ink pendants and other items. I used a Metal Punch for Retail Hanger that I purchased on Amazon to punch out the little peg hooks holder for my hanging jewelry pieces. I found that you can also use just a regular hole punch, but it will depend on the retail hooks. 

Another option and one of my favorite ways, because I'm all about presentation is to use the cards to write up a mini description. This let's your customers know that these are original one of a kind, hand painted art piece. I then place the pendant in a simple elegant white gift box. It is a bit more expensive but it really creates that next level of professionalism. 

You can order these little jewelry boxes from Amazon. I like to purchase them in Bulk and they end up around .35 cents a piece for 100 with Prime free shipping for me.

Getting ready for Summer Sales at Sebasco Harbor Resorts!

One of our family's favorite spots ( I know so many in Maine to choose from) is Sebasco Harbor Resorts. Last year they opened this great little gift shop, and I was honored to have my work in there as well being the featured artist at the Pilot House Restaurant.

 Last year I didn't have any painting or prints of that area, so thankfully my wonderful photographer friend Melissa M. has been snapping some great reference photo's for me! 

These 3 are all original Watercolor paintings are available in my etsy shop. I am working on prints and cards now, so hope to have them finished and reproduced in time for the shops seasonal opening!

I've been working on my photographs for Etsy - I see so many pretty ways that jewelry and clothing items are photographed and sometime's the Art is just the Art....so here is my attempt at being more fancy!

I just wanted to Thank you for all the likes, share's and support during my 30 day challenge. It's not an easy task finishing a painting daily and you make it so enjoyable for me to post each day with all of your encouragement and sweet comments. I think I look forward to those more than you know! The old saying see it say it! It really means the world to me that my art can make you FEEL something when you look at it.

I'm really happy to share that I've sold over 9 of the thirty paintings already - THANK YOU!!! The rest will be heading to my retailer shops and venues. I've posted them on etsy too - although it's an accounting nightmare once they head out to the shops, so I may be pulling some of them off as they go out.

I will continue to paint daily - but without the added stress of having to complete it!

Why I Photograph the Painting's Progress - Squirrel Point Lighthouse, Maine

Took a break from working with Alcohol Ink on Tiles an went for a larger

9x12" AI painting of Squirrel Point Lighthouse here in Bath Maine on Yupo paper.

Here's a hint that I like to use when I'm painting buildings such as a Maine Lighthouse or animals. Take pictures of your progress as you go! When I'm unsure of when and where to stop I find it best to photograph the painting and take a step back.

Once the photo of the painting is taken, I download it to my computer and view it on my screen. 

Sometimes I'll post my steps on Facebook too.

It really gives your eye a break and you can see things you didn't see before.

If you look at the bottom right hand side of the lighthouse in the second picture here, you can see it's off slightly. I also decided that the rocks need a bit more details for my taste.

Another great way is to see opportunity area's is to hold your painting up to a mirror and look at the reverse image.  It helps you see where lines just don't look right...they may be a bit off or need a slight adjustment.

Power Up Your Art Marketing - Free Tips

My husband is a Senior Marketing Manager for a Vet Pharmaceutical company and he is always helping me out! Thanks to him I have learned many new ways to use the internet to help my online sales! He recently published a book for Internet marketing called Power Up Your Email Marketing.

In Today's post I thought I would share a little bit of PROMO info! For those of you that are looking to sell your work online via facebook!

 #1 rule...always try to use your links to direct your clients to your art page.

I use this great little FREE program called Ipiccy

You can download your photos of your Alcohol Ink art or AIArt and then add some cool text to get a FREE professional yet easy advertisement for you to use on facebook or blog.

This one was used to make a coupon code for my Kellie Lynn Art Facebook page. I posted the picture on my facebook page and then added the etsy store link. It's a great way to draw traffic to your store as well as have folks share you items!

Gaining email addresses is an important way to stay connected with your clients/collectors. It's a way to share your newest work as well as direct them to sales, or specials you may be running.

I use an email program called Mail Chimp. You can sign up for FREE and it can be attached to your facebook page. Here is another example I made via Ipiccy -  sign up for my newsletter by giving away a FREE print.

So don't be afraid to get yourself out there!

Selling on Facebook better than Etsy?

 Well, it's been a busy and exciting week!

It would seem that I've found a new medium to work on, hand painted Alcohol Inks on ceramic tiles. The theme of the week would be dragonfly's (one of my favorite subjects)! 

I love them because each one is so uniquely different., it's like they have their own little personalities!

Had a wonderful response to these cute little buggers - seems that I'm selling them faster than I can post them on etsy.

Decided to use my paypal account to invoice customers directly from facebook by using the clients email, it's been working wonderfully. This saves me a lot of money from listing on etsy especially when I have to turn around and remove the tile without it even showing that I made a sale. I'm beginning to think selling on facebook may be the way to go for me.

Alcohol Ink Paintings On Ceramic Tiles

***UPDATE BELOW

Well well well, look what else I found to paint on with inks! These are just basic 6x6" white glazed tiles that I picked up in hopes of them working with inks! They have a glossy surface, so my thinking was ...yeah it should work!

It worked SUPER, and I was really surprised to see that it was as easy to work with as using Yupo paper, which is very expensive. You do have to seal these first with a varnish and then a high gloss UV protection finish.

I opted to leave the backs plain for now...but added little felt circles on the back to prevent them from scratching any surface. Another AI Artist suggested that I try cork backings or frames. Thought that was a great idea, so I ordered some sample wooden tile frames this week - I have a feeling I'm really going to like them. I'll post a picture when they come in!

***8/17 Update: Check out my newest blog post, I've started using RESIN, Seals, protects from water, can use hot cups 120F,  Has built in UV protection. Testing it now and the results so far have been FAB!

Heard A Saying That Struck A Chord

"Fear is only temporary but Regret will last forever".  

I Heard this saying and it really struck a chord with me.... it must be the Alcohol ink paintings that brought back some old fears in me.

As artist's that first step is a hard one. Thoughts bombard you.... Is it good enough, will people like it, should I show anyone? These are all questions that go through our mind.

Three years ago, in December of 2011 I decided to take a leap of faith with my Art and listed my first piece on Ebay. It seems sad to say that it was easier to put my work out there to strangers rather than my friends for fear of being rejected.

To my pleasant surprise the first piece sold...and then another...and another.  I added my work to Daily Paint Works  in 2012, and decided to have some prints made online at Society6 and Fine Art America.

In early 2013 I got up the nerve to Exhibit my work at Starbucks, Cooks Lobster House and The Highlands. Then in October I added items to my etsy store and started to explore Alcohol Inks and began having cards made by a local printers so that I could attend my first craft fair.

During December we lost our 16 year old lab so working on Pet Portraits  this past holiday season was very special to me. They really took off once I posted my first one on facebook! I ended up painting seven of them in less than 2 weeks!


So not meaning sound like I'm tooting my horn, but I guess it made me think....that over all it's been quite the scary yet a super fun journey over the past 2 years...Thinking back, I can't imagine if I had let fear win!

Day 29 "Floating" Acceptance and Faith.

Maintaining balance in all areas of your life is so important...we have lots of emotions that hit us everyday. The jellyfish symbolizes being sensitive and understanding the value of floating along or going with your emotions rather than being too stiff  with what life sends your way and having faith to move along.

The jellyfish has only the current to rely on to carry it along and must have the movement of the ocean to survive. We all need movement and change, this one really symbolized my new work with inks.

Guess what....using some of my new ink colors today, very exciting! This Cardinal was painted with Raisin, purple twilight, and Meadow Green. Funny, when I first started with the inks I really had a hard time manipulating them but after some practice and "sticking with it", it's become very rewarding.

I tried for a more realistic looking Peacock this time! I really like how this one turned out. Somehow I  managed to keep my style a little loose but with some details in the face.

This time I used a pencil instead of an ink pen to draw  out the basic shape of the peacock bird. I learned on my last piece that the pen ink will run when the alcohol touches it....should have seen that one coming!

You may also be wondering what all the paint dots are underneath the bird. I made myself a ink chart. This is a great way to help determine your color choices! I can see them laid out in front of me before I drop them onto the Yupo paper. 

The colors are not exactly as they are on the labels. Well, they may have started that way but inks are messy and before long most of the labels are covered with ink making it hard to tell! Before I would pick up any old blue and go with it!

I started out by painting the background first, then added the layers of color over once it dried.

I'm still planning on doing a video demo in February....so if you have never tried AI you can see a few tips that I've learned from trial and error.

How to Make A Snowman bookmark

I loved painting each one of these little guys...they make for the perfect stocking stuffer! They each have their own unique little face with a smile! I love to read a good paperback and just like the smell and feel of holding a real book. You can just never have enough bookmarks!

So here is how I made them!

First tape down  your paper and separate each bookmark shape - I like to put a 1/4" border around mine.

Then I pencil in my snowman shapes.

 Using Black gouache paint I painted my backgrounds.

Once the backgrounds are dried I put in the faces and orange carrot nose.

Using White gouache and a small brush I add snow to the tops of the nose and head and then take a  wet toothbrush,  splatter the snow flakes.

Remove the tape once they are dry.

Trim and cut them separately. It's okay that no two are exact - that what makes them hand made!

Then just pop in a hole punch at the top and pull a ribbon through!

Then package them up for the holidays!
