Watercolor money saver masking hack!

Not sure if you feel the same way, but summers always tend to be my downtime creatively.
I am definitely not lazy, just enjoying my family, the outdoors, and my gardens. The lupines have gone by and are just about to turn to seed so I can replant soon. 

I've been testing out something pretty cool this week! 

You know that masking fluid is pretty expensive and comes in the smallest jars right? Well, I thought I would give regular old monster latex a try in place of my Winsor and newton masking. I decided to use some Strathmore watercolor cards to start. Tested both of them three ways just to make sure. 

1. For the first test I let both the winsor and monster dry naturally on the paper. 

2. I used a heat gun to dry ( I wanted to see if it would adhere to the paper and not come off as easy.

3. Let the masking dry and sit for over a week before I attempted to remove it.

Well during that test, I felt the urge to paint from this gorgeous reference photo that my friend, Benjamin Williamson took (which you can purchase by the way if you don't want to paint it).

Watercolor Earrings (LIVE)

What a fun project I finished up today.

I started out with some 140lb cotton watercolor paper and created my leaf shape. I tried a few different brushes a few weeks ago to see which one created an easy leaf. I also have a youtube video on this if you want to make easy leaf shapes. 

Cut out the shape using scissors and add some black pen and gold pen details for a little bling.

Next UV resin on both sides, it took about 4 minutes on each side to cure. 

Once the uv resin was dry use a Dremel tool to create a small hole near the top for the jump ring to hang and added a small earring.

She is a licensed Art4Healing facilitator. Her focus is on wellbeing and building confidence for others that may have struggled from abuse or as a way to manage stress or pain.

I know that realistic paintings can be intimidating for many watercolorists.
So, I've decided to jump in with the details for you in this new Fall course.
We will bring the whole process together with layers and layers, taking your basic paintings (where many of us tending to stop) to the next level creating a more realistic watercolor.

This class starts out for beginners but in the end we will complete a very realistic Maple leaf.

Alcohol Ink Art Birch Tree Painting on Tile Tutorial

This weeks Alcohol Ink demo is what I like to call my moody birch tree on a tile. 

This Alcohol Ink Art Birch Tree Painting on Tile Tutorial is super Fast and Easy, seriously a 5 minute Alcohol ink painting using jacquard pinata inks on tiles.

I will go over a quick wet in wet background then we'll add some dancing silver mixative to create a sparkling Moon and reflection on the water.

How to Paint A Watercolor Pansy Flower

In this weeks Youtube Demo video I wanted to see if I could paint the same painting first using Watercolor then Alcohol Inks. This week I started with the Watercolor Demo and next Tuesday will be the Alcohol ink Version...so stayed tuned.

First we will start out using just a light wash for the project and then we gradually add the darker values and details at the end. One of the biggest mistakes I see students make is to try to get the details in too soon. So take your time, block in your colors and paint along with me. Watercolor Brush Pen Tutorial for a Sweet little Seascape Card

Watercolor Brush Pen painting technique tutorial for beginners. This is a quick and easy seascape painting done with a Water brush Ohuhu Pen. We will create a super cute watercolor card with the finished art piece.  Stick around till the end to see how we add some pen and ink details!

We'll start off with a quick wet in wet painting using winsor and newton cotman kit and a Ohuhu water brush pen filled with water. The colors used in this painting are Ultramarine Blue, Phathlo Blue, Sap Green, Raw Umber, Viridian, and White Gouache. I'll have the links below for you.

Once the painting is complete we will then use a little pen and ink for some details, the I"ll show you how I tear the edges and then we'll add it to a card.

ALCOHOL INK ART WATER BRUSH PEN VALENTINE CARD TURTORIAL

Alcohol Ink Art Water Brush Pen Valentine Card Tutorial  - Create this super cute Valentine Card using Piñata Alcohol Inks and a water brush pen filled with Isopropyl alcohol.

In this demo I used Yupo paper, Water Brush (refillable), Pinata Inks in the colors Chili pepper Red, and Baha Blue, Gold, and Passion Purple. We also used some White and Gold gel pend for some little whimsical details. The painting were sealed with Winsor Newton Varnish (built in UV).

Once the Heart painting was complete and sealed (which is optional) I used Strathmore Watercolor cards to attach the yupo paper to using spray glue.
