How to Paint A Watercolor Pansy Flower

In this weeks Youtube Demo video I wanted to see if I could paint the same painting first using Watercolor then Alcohol Inks. This week I started with the Watercolor Demo and next Tuesday will be the Alcohol ink Version...so stayed tuned.

First we will start out using just a light wash for the project and then we gradually add the darker values and details at the end. One of the biggest mistakes I see students make is to try to get the details in too soon. So take your time, block in your colors and paint along with me. Art Resin on Tiles - UV TEST

Art Resin had a built in UV stabilizer and I wanted to share my test with you as to how well it worked for me.  

Love the clear glassy appearance that Art resin creates on tiles.

Here is what I started out with - I created this tile using Alcohol Inks on a smooth white glossy tile from Home Depot. Now if you are new to alcohol inks you can use them on tiles or Yupo, mineral paper, canvas, and lots of other materials. For those of you that have worked with inks understand the pain staking process of sealing them and then being scared that they may fade over time.

INSIDE TEST

If you keep your Inks out of the sun or UV rays and seal them they are much better and Ranger inks are working on better fade resistant. I personally have paintings on tile and on Yupo that are out of direct sunlight that have not faded in my home.

Art Resin works great giving the tile a wonderful glass like shine and really makes your image pop ! I've been using it with cold and hot drinks without any problems. Hot cups up to 120 F are fine, but do not use them as a trivet.

Note that sometimes your cups will create a vacuum seal under the cup so be careful when lifting or you may take the tile with your cup and when it let's go, hold your breathe because it will drop on your toes, or to the ground and well you can image how that may turn out. Crash - New tile please!

OUTSIDE TEST

The real test - First, I have tried a test tile outside in the sun with a few spray coats of Kamar, sad to say that it only lasted about 1 hour. The fading was so bad I could no longer see the painting or colors. Results inside the home as I said are great, so I wanted to try it outside.

 2 coats of Kamar varnish and one coat of Art Resin - I set the tile outside in the direct Maine Sunshine - it gets about 8 straight hours on intense sunshine here.

Here is what the tile looked like after 2 full weeks of being outside - pretty happy to share this result, I'm giving this a solid 10 - it looks like day one!

Free Demo on Youtube - Acrylic Painting Busy Bee

Here's a painting I recently did for a fundraiser. Since I don't have an acrylic course set up online yet I was curious if there was some interest out there for some? 

I would love to have you follow along and paint with me. I've added some text for you to follow along, and some music, but feel free to turn it off or down if you feel it distracts you. Some parts have been sped up as not to bore you with repetitive strokes, but I think you'll get the idea!

I'll cover all the materials in the video and I've added a Material List with links for you below. Remember feel free to choose your own color pallet, and if you have other acrylic paints, brushes, or smaller canvas those will work. 


Creating the petals to the flowers is easier than you may think. You can see that my base is painted in with purples but when I add the white see how the brush strokes change down in the front going horizontal instead of vertical. That will give the appearance of your petals turning upwards. 

Here is what you'll need to get started.

Busy Bee Acrylic Painting Materials:

• 16x20" Primed Stretched Canvas

• Brushes - Large Flat 1" and Small Flat 1/4" plus a small round size 3 detail brush with a point.
• Acrylic Paints - Colors Purple, White, Black, and Yellow.
• Easel - optional (I worked with a flat canvas).
• Mixing Tray or  paper plate for paints
• 1 container for water to clean brushes
• Paper Towels
• Gloves
• Apron

At the end of April we had an amazing turn out of 44 painters for the Kora Fundraiser and we have another function coming up next week for the Lodge in Minot Maine.

Here's the newest painting scene I've created for them. They'll choose their own color of flower they want to do. We'll be adding this one as a scene for our future group choices so if you are interested in holding a Company Team Building Event or Fundraiser and live in Midcoast Maine please send me a note!

This painting is done with Acrylics on a 16x20" canvas (Affiliate Link) with a 1" gallery wrap.
I"m working on a pineapple next and if you have some ideas you would like to see, please share them with me!

Played with my New Air Brush/Compressor last night.

Here is the scoop on the new air brush/compressor....LOVE IT! 

I have been using canned air with my Alcohol Ink paintings and it can become very expensive quickly. Plus with some of the canned air....it's not just air in there and I'm breathing that in. So I found this little beauty online for only $49. 

The air pressure can be adjusted and it's not too strong at max. I was pleasantly surprised at how very quiet, and compact it was. 

Did need to be careful to keep the point down. Let's just say I did have a few splatter attacks on my desk, face, and well just about everywhere. Glad it was the white and not red or it would have looked like a crime scene. 

( Take proper safety precautions - you do not want to breath any of the splatter).

I'm letting this one dry and then comes the next steps of adding some resin over the top.

I'm planning on adding a few layers with resin and paint to create a 3D look.  You can check back in a few days, I hope to have a short video of the process for you.
