June's Art Exploration color theme is the color pearl! First, of all I want to mention that my grandmother's name was Pearl and my aunt's name is Garnet. I think we had a theme going here. 

So what color is pearl?  Kind of a hard one to describe I would say? Is it really a color or is it just that reflection or smooth and creamy shine that it gives off?

Here's what white stands for - Purity, Truth, Dreamer, Innocence, Simplicity, Cleanliness, Faith, Honesty, Peace etc.... and according to Wiki Pedia "the color pearl is a pale tint of off white. It is a representation of the average color of a pearl. The first recorded use of a pearl as a color name in English was in 1604. The color used in interior design when an off-white tint is desired. 

Now you may ask, how do I use that with watercolors?

Today I explored Winsor newton's Iridescent Medium, and it really made a shiny impact with my watercolors. Just a touch of this goes a long way and it really does give a lovely pearly look to a painting. You can use it mixed with the watercolors to create shine with any color or use it on top of a watercolor wash.

You can see after the watercolor has dried, I added the medium on top of the color wash.

So I decided to create some more jewelry pieces, and since we are giving it some shine it inspired me to create some mermaid earrings this week. You may remember my recent live stream on youtube and blog post about my leaf earrings? I'm using the same process to create these fun mermaid earrings. I used a little black sharpie to create some scales. 

I added the UV resin on each side and did find that since they are longer and not as wide they did curl a bit more, but I was okay with that. Reminds me of a little mermaid fin.

Drilled a small hole near the top and added a jump ring and hook, fun quick and easy! You can see the shine a bit better in the Video, so make sure to check that out.

New Jewelry UV Resin projects

Hello, Art Peeps!

(Speaking of Peeps...do you find them to be your favorite snack in April along with those little Cadbury eggs? I know I do, yum! )

If you have been following my Instagram page you may have seen some of my new UV resin projects that I've been working on. I have to tell you I'm very excited about how fast I can make these mini art pendants! I use all of my old scraps from past projects that just didn't pan out. 

Since the original Alcohol Ink Pendant course was one of my very first online courses, I've added some updated lectures including how to use UV resin in place of glue. It's a great way to eliminate those pesky bubbles or silver spots under your glass cabochons.

I've also found some awesome little steel bezels that you can engrave on, plus they do not tarnish like some of the other sterling silver/plated bezels for those of us that hate to clean them. 

I also added some quick tips on how I photograph my finished jewelry pieces for online sales.

Alcohol Ink and Resin Jewelry - Violet Flower Bracelet

I had a request for a commission pair of earrings from a client. This was a gift and the person loves flowers, especially anything purple, and they really wanted a violet or pansy.
I video taped most of my process not on the earrings but on the single bracelet. You can watch it on my Youtube Channel. I'll be posting a link to the video below.

 

I am always up for the challenge and once I got started it was fun to expand on the original plan.

It took a few tries to get the shape down with the resin and get a feel for how the inks would move with and without heat. I worked with Snow Cap Alcohol Ink to start for the base. It's a mixative and I added it to the Clear Art Resin to tint it.

I found these lovely little Adjustable Bracelets online and they had just arrived, so I made a few of these. I'll be posting a few more as the first 2 batches have sold. You will be able to find them in my etsy shop soon. 

I also found these cute little charms that I'm thinking on adding to my next batch of bracelet!
They have all kind of little options. This pack of 100 had butterflies, lots of sea themed charms like mermaids, shells, suns, elephants, owls, keys and more.

Jewelry Art TIP - Use Resin (NOT GLUE) to create Less Air Bubbles ( Bezels and Glass Cabochon)

I have heard from a number of students from my online Alcohol Ink Jewelry Course that air bubbles are a problem for them. This is something that can happen when you first start making pendants until you get the hang of it. It's that dreaded....they look great right now then a day later when it's dry you discover those silvery little buggers (you may know exactly what I mean) of air that trapped themselves hidden only to make their great escape 24 hours or so later. It's all about that seal. If you squeeze out too much glue it can suck the air back in or if you don't use enough glue to begin with. There are a number of scenarios that can happen to create these silver spots.

When I first started making pendants I used the glue but I've graduated and wanted to share with you what I now use! I LOVE using Art Resin for my bezel pendants with or with out Glass Cabochons because it has UV protection built in and my clients do not have to worry so much about getting the pendants wet because unlike glue resin is waterproof. Please note that some colors can fade when using resin, so I find it best to seal them first with a few light sprays of Kamar Varnish before I seal them with resin. If you choose to use Art Resin (there are many other 2 part epoxy brands to choose from) but Art resin has UV so you would not need to spray a coat of UV spray after Kamar.

Packaging Jewelry - Making Original Hang Tags For Your Necklaces

Art Tags - Perfect for Retail Shops and Craft Fairs

If you have taken an online course with me (Course Sale Links Below) on Pendants and are thinking about selling your work at craft fairs or online at Etsy, let me share with you my easy way of creating some retail shop tags for your Alcohol Ink pendants and other items. I made these online at Vista Print using the square business cards.  (Referral Link) ----> Vista Print  

I used a Metal Punch for Retail Hanger that I purchased on Amazon to punch out the little peg hooks holder for my hanging jewelry pieces. I found that you can also use just a regular hole punch, but it will depend on the retail hooks. 

Another option and one of my favorite ways, because I'm all about presentation is to use the cards to write up a mini description. This let's your customers know that these are original one of a kind, hand painted art piece. I then place the pendant in a simple elegant white gift box. It is a bit more expensive but it really creates that next level of professionalism. 

You can order these little jewelry boxes from Amazon. I like to purchase them in Bulk and they end up around .35 cents a piece for 100 with Prime free shipping for me.

Creating Alcohol Ink Pendants in Bulk Saves time - Read more about my process!

I've been busy creating more pendants for my Retailers (above is a sample).  It took me some time to get the whole process down but now I am able to create in bulk and be more efficient. As I am sure you are well aware, that processes are always changing and we get more efficient with time. So to possibly save you time and easy I wanted to share my new process for bulk orders with you.

Also if you seem to have trouble with the Silvery air bubbles with your glue this is a game changer. You can choose to use the Glass Cabochon on top of the resin if you like the magnification or go without.

I will often wait to create my Alcohol Ink pendants when I have Art Resin project  starting (Usually my ZEN DISKS or my Resin Jewelry). A big money and time saver for me was to use my left over resin in place of the glue in the pendants. Since Art Resin has built in UV resistant, I do NOT have to spray with UV Varnish. Plus with Resin, I get less bubbles than with glue and a super clear pendant. (1-2 oz of resin will go a long way) I'll put a link for the Mini Art Resin Kit below for you.

But in order to be efficient with the resin before it starts to cure I make sure to have my pendants ready to go.  Here are the steps I take, so that when I have my resin out and mixed I can use the left overs  right away.

1. Step one was to create all my backgrounds. I was at camp over the 4th of July and was able to get a bunch of beautiful color combos created on Mineral and Yupo Paper.

2. Step two - Depending on the Humidity in the air I will wait a day before doing this step, giving the Backgrounds plenty of time to dry, then I cut out all my circles from the backgrounds.

Now the planning stage starts.

3. Step Three - once my circles are cut I use my black sharpie or my white/silver/or gold gel
pen to draw my Trees, Dragonflies, or anything that comes to mind. I really analyze the colors and choose what works best with the design I see in my mind.

4. Step Four - Once they are all drawn, then I seal them with Kamar Varnish Spray. This can sometimes be tricky because now they are cut.

5. Step Five - After a day of drying, I'll then decide what goes with the different colored metals. I will line them up so they are ready to go (moves quicker if you have a plan before you resin) and then add the resin on top of the piece carefully as to not over fill them and add the glass on top. Wipe up any extra resin that may come out of the sides.

6. Step Six - I check back in on my pieces before the first hour to make sure there is no over spill, then let them dry for at least 24/48 hours.

7. Once they are Dry you can put on your chains and package them up.

Maine Nature Pendant - Real Birch Tree Bark

Follow me on Instagram and See my NEW CREATIONS for July!    After a restful 4th of July week up to Camp I'm ready to create. I found some lovely Birch Bark during a walk in the Maine woods. The Bark comes from a fallen tree, that I found laying on the ground, so I picked it up in hopes of using it in a piece of Art. I only have a limited quantity of these, they have been selling fast! I"ve been busy at the Portland Jetport this summer, looks like it's going to be a great summer.  Hope you are enjoying yours too!

When you have the Art resin all mixed up an you don't want to waste it...you get creative! If you have been following me on Instagram you may of seen the LOVELY Full jar of original Maine Sea Glass that my Mom so graciously donated to me for my art. She has been collecting this glass for years along the Maine Beaches. Many are from hard to get to places by boat from her years of sailing. My favorite color to work with is the Teals and Blues but unfortunately there isn't a lot of it, so again it will be  created in limited quantities.
