June's Art Exploration color theme is the color pearl!

June's Art Exploration color theme is the color pearl! First, of all I want to mention that my grandmother's name was Pearl and my aunt's name is Garnet. I think we had a theme going here.

So what color is pearl?  Kind of a hard one to describe I would say? Is it really a color or is it just that reflection or smooth and creamy shine that it gives off?

Here's what white stands for - Purity, Truth, Dreamer, Innocence, Simplicity, Cleanliness, Faith, Honesty, Peace etc.... and according to Wiki Pedia "the color pearl is a pale tint of off white. It is a representation of the average color of a pearl. The first recorded use of a pearl as a color name in English was in 1604. The color used in interior design when an off-white tint is desired.

Now you may ask, how do I use that with watercolors?
Today I explored Winsor newton's Iridescent Medium, and it really made a shiny impact with my watercolors. Just a touch of this goes a long way and it really does give a lovely pearly look to a painting. You can use it mixed with the watercolors to create shine with any color or use it on top of a watercolor wash.

You can see after the watercolor has dried, I added the medium on top of the color wash.

So I decided to create some more jewelry pieces, and since we are giving it some shine it inspired me to create some mermaid earrings this week. You may remember my recent live stream on youtube and blog post about my leaf earrings? I'm using the same process to create these fun mermaid earrings. I used a little black sharpie to create some scales.

I added the UV resin on each side and did find that since they are longer and not as wide they did curl a bit more, but I was okay with that. Reminds me of a little mermaid fin.

Drilled a small hole near the top and added a jump ring and hook, fun quick and easy! You can see the shine a bit better in the Video, so make sure to check that out.

So many options with Pearl. Make sure to check out  Lisa Hedrick and Jessica Sanders video's this week, they will show you a few other ways to use the color pearl this month.

We are all about exploring art, and would love to have you join us in the Art Exploration Facebook group, it's FREE and we are covering a new color each month for the year of 2020.

Vendor Display Set Up

I was looking for something to display my cards on. A friend of mine had used one that her dad made for a craft fair. Her's had one panel up and one sideways so that you could display cards vertical or horizontal.

Just so happens that I stopped into a second hand shop and found this. It was green with red shelves on the back so I had plans to spray paint it!

I loved the idea because you get a great look at all the card options at a glance. Mine were in boxes and stacked behind one another. But...when I got home I realized that HEY this could be great for tiles! I used these little coated display stands from Display to go to put the ones with out hanger up.

Here is the packaging close up. I use polypropylene bags from amazon, they have a bunch of different sizes and have a self adhesive strip.

I used little S hooks for the back and epoxied a hanger on the back.

Also purchased some black wooden tile stands from Aftosa.

Selling on Facebook better than Etsy?

Well, it's been a busy and exciting week!

It would seem that I've found a new medium to work on, hand painted Alcohol Inks on ceramic tiles. The theme of the week would be dragonfly's (one of my favorite subjects)!

I love them because each one is so uniquely different., it's like they have their own little personalities!

Had a wonderful response to these cute little buggers - seems that I'm selling them faster than I can post them on etsy.

Decided to use my paypal account to invoice customers directly from facebook by using the clients email, it's been working wonderfully. This saves me a lot of money from listing on etsy especially when I have to turn around and remove the tile without it even showing that I made a sale. I'm beginning to think selling on facebook may be the way to go for me.

Please drop by or better yet follow my Kellie Lynn Art Facebook Page
I'll be posting more new tiles this week!

Alcohol Ink Paintings On Ceramic Tiles

***UPDATE BELOW

Well well well, look what else I found to paint on with inks! These are just basic 6x6" white glazed tiles that I picked up in hopes of them working with inks! They have a glossy surface, so my thinking was ...yeah it should work!

It worked SUPER, and I was really surprised to see that it was as easy to work with as using Yupo paper, which is very expensive. You do have to seal these first with a varnish and then a high gloss UV protection finish.

I opted to leave the backs plain for now...but added little felt circles on the back to prevent them from scratching any surface. Another AI Artist suggested that I try cork backings or frames. Thought that was a great idea, so I ordered some sample wooden tile frames this week - I have a feeling I'm really going to like them. I'll post a picture when they come in!

Hand Painted Ornaments Perfect Holiday Gift

I've been meaning for years to paint some handmade ornaments, and finally did! I think they make such wonderful little gifts for those folks you have no idea what to buy.

I purchased a box of 10 clear ornaments and painted little snowy blue holiday trees on them with acrylic paints. Tied a ribbon on the top and packaged in a clear bag. The little tags are a cute added touch too. I'll be posting how I made those tomorrow. They are WICKED easy to make!

How to Make A Snowman bookmark

I loved painting each one of these little guys...they make for the perfect stocking stuffer! They each have their own unique little face with a smile! I love to read a good paperback and just like the smell and feel of holding a real book. You can just never have enough bookmarks!

So here is how I made them!

First tape down  your paper and separate each bookmark shape - I like to put a 1/4" border around mine.

Then I pencil in my snowman shapes.

Using Black gouache paint I painted my backgrounds.

Once the backgrounds are dried I put in the faces and orange carrot nose.

Using White gouache and a small brush I add snow to the tops of the nose and head and then take a  wet toothbrush,  splatter the snow flakes.

Remove the tape once they are dry.

Trim and cut them separately. It's okay that no two are exact - that what makes them hand made!

Then just pop in a hole punch at the top and pull a ribbon through!

Then package them up for the holidays!
