Here's Nixon - a handsome looking brown eyed, soft, fury friend, black Lab. And may I state, doesn't this dog have the sweetest eyes! 

We lost our Black Lab Kota last year around this same time in December. She was 16 years old and we were very fortunate to have the chance to adopt her from the local Coastal Humane Society in Brunswick, Maine, Animal Shelter at the young age of 9 months old! 

She was very loved and is dearly missed, and each time I paint a black Lab it brings back such wonderful memories of her. Nixon is the second Black Labrador Retriever that I've painted since our loss, each time I hope to capture the love and sweetness of this breed that I remember in her.

Here's our Kota - The escape Artist - she was a bit dirty here....I remember this day well. She did her Houdini act and made her rounds in the neighborhood this day....her bandana was brand new before she left, lets just say it had a bit of mud here and there when she got back.

Had the chance to paint with my mother today! 
It's been over 4 weeks since we've painted together,  I've really missed it!

On my ride over to Brunswick, Maine today to see her I was in awe of all the colors along the river. It's so amazing to see all the changes in just under a week and is it just me or do the colors seem to be incredibly vibrant this year? It's rather funny, sometimes it's hard for me to stay focused....everything I see turns into a painting in my head!

I was busy this weekend working on another Maine island painting for my exhibit coming up June 27th - July 10th at The Barn in Phippsburg, Maine.

Still have a few more details to work out, but it's coming along! This is another larger painting for me - 36x24" on Gallery wrapped canvas. I love being a Maine Artist....there are just so many little places in New England to paint.

HBS Elementary School Craft Fair in Brunswick Maine on Novemeber 9th from 9-4!

10x10 Brunswick Event Arts Are Elementary

Would love to have you all stop in and see this fabulous Event!

I'll be at the St Paul's Episcopal Church (Parrish Hall) Friday Night!

All artwork is 10” x 10” and is framed and ready to hang. The $200 price for each piece is shared equally between the artist and Arts Are Elementary, a non-profit organization that provides artist-in-residence programs for all elementary school students in Brunswick.

Brunswick's Arts Are Elementary 10x10

Here are the two pieces that I have chosen for this years "Arts Are Elementary"!


"CAREFREE"

This little bud was picked and sat carefree on the window sill....and was heavenly to smell.

The flower is a Rosa Rugosa, sometimes called the Beach Flower. You see many of them along the beach paths at Popham Beach, Maine. 

They smell terrific and they were originally brought in to Maine to help preserve the beach erosion. They are a "carefree" plant with a wonderful fragrance. 

"CARRIED AWAY"

Wave's can be very symbolic of your emotions, and this particular wave was inspired during a trip to Reids State Park. I was very pregnant at the time and climbing over the rocks was a challenge, but I made it to the top rock!

Sitting watching the waves crash along the shore with the warm sun shining on my belly, was such a peaceful yet exciting time, knowing I was going to become a mother for the first time very soon. 

Both pieces will be available for purchase, at this year's Arts Are Elementary sale, Friday September 27, 2013.

Maine River Rocks - Getting Ready For An Art Show!

Getting ready for an Art Show coming up in June. I am working on a rock series. This one is a larger 22x30 on aquabord with my favorite 2" Wood cradle. These are great for me, no matting or framing required!

Always playing with paints and styles even after 20 years...guess it never gets old with me. This is a looser style painting. I lightly sketched in the Cardinal and used a very wet on wet technique on the outside of the bird first.

This kind of painting is very fun for me....love freedom and lack of restriction it gives me. I'm free to explore and play...just like a kid.

Once the background was done I started some detailing on the bird. Here comes my problem...I like details and find it hard to just leave it alone...think you may of heard me say this before if you have been reading my blog for a little while now.

A big thank you to a fellow artist Karl from Watercolor Journal. We chatted a bit on facebook yesterday and I just love his style.....he encouraged me to give it a try!

After painting a lot of little details on the last painting Autumn Reflections,  I had to take a few days off from painting. Having those blahs...wishing the spring would come!

Decided to work on a quick study today of Brunswick Station. I'm listening to the train blow it's horn while I'm posting! I could definitely work more of the details on it! Different than my other work...the plan was to do a quick study - on this one getting only what I could get done in an hour. The front has a lot of details and shading with a detailed hitch in the front...lots of metal and shapes...so I opted to leave them out in this one.

"Magical Place" Birch Trees A Favorite Subject

Birch trees are one of my favorite subjects to paint. I wanted to feel the magic of the sunshine and the joyful happiness that the Maine forest brings to my heart.  It's so peaceful here in the woods and I hope it gives you that same feeling when you look at it.

Change of mood here and I hate to be negative but thought I would share my thoughts with you on this .....On a crappy note, I used a masque called Fineline and I was not happy with this brand at all. It seemed very, VERY hard to remove.

If you can picture it...I was sitting at my studio table for like hours...my poor little fingers were almost raw because I couldn't use my eraser without leaving most of it behind on my paper! My new eraser works great to remove pencil but this one did not take off the masque.

Note to self...buy a new bottle but pick a different brand.

In the end though, I was super happy with the way the painting turned out. It's another larger piece for me. Since the January 30 day challenge that Leslie Saeta put on...I am working my way up from my comfort zone of smaller 5x7 and 8x10 works.

Merrymeeting Bay is just around the corner from my house and the sunrises are incredible there. Love the warm tones in this....I can just see myself sitting there in an adironack chair sipping my steaming cup of joe!

Day 8 of the 30 Day Painting Challenge.

Captured a beautiful picture of a red sunset the other night while driving home on Pleasant Hill Road, in Brunswick Maine. For some reason nature just blesses this area with the most incredible sky colors! Whether it is the morning or evening, sunny or wet, summer or winter....it is just beautiful here. That is one of the reasons Larry and I (when we ran) would chose this path! It was such an anticipation for us.....what would nature show us just around the corner. We would wait for the break in the trees and then WOW the view!

I love chocolate! Maybe I should work on Chocolate covered strawberries tomorrow. Yum, did I say how much I love chocolate! These looked so good to me but I'm actually allergic to cherries (what), I know! Ooooh, I haven't had those little boxes of the gooey ones you can buy at the store in forever.

It's the day after Halloween and with the big old candy buzz everyone around here has I could only
think of painting an apple. Now it could be the sugar coma affecting my brain, but I'm going to say, nope it's just a lazy thinking day. Back to basic's sometimes is the best thing for my lack of creativity.
