This week I've decided to show you how to lighten and change the color and shade of Pinata Purple's by Jacquard alcohol inks. We'll use some blending solution to lighten and then demo a short seascape scene.

This week started my Adult Education Courses, which I absolutely LOVE to teach.

This weeks course was held at Gray Adult Education and we played with A straw. It was so exciting to see my students faces as they began. Although it's hard to let go...they did (but not at the beginning).

Resin on Liquid Art Panel by Pebeo

I wanted to share with you my newest contemporary piece, unfortunately didn't get to video tape this one, but maybe next time. I'm getting more brave with my resin and slowly working up to a larger canvas, but I decided to try an abstract resin piece on Liquid Art Panel made by Pebeo. I"ll post a referral link down below for you. 

What is a Liquid Art Panel? Basically it's a panel that has a lip or a border around it to keep in liquids such as Resin, Liquid Acrylics, or encaustic waxes from pouring out over the edges. This one has a 3/4" wooden boarder that can be painted or stained to match your art. They come in many sizes, this one is an 18x24".

I find them fairly easy to use, but you do need to be careful that your resin or paints (what-ever medium you choose) doesn't over fill the lip or you will have a mess running down the sides. I have used blue painters tape in the past but it was hard to get it over the front lip perfectly, so I found that babysitting it by adding the resin slowly was easier for me than dealing with the tape.

I have used these a few times in the past. Below is a Silvery Moon painting of a tree, it is a smaller panel - 11x14". I would recommend that you start small and work out the kinks before trying a larger panel.

The big difference between these two paintings - "Silvery Moon" was painted with Alcohol Inks prior to adding a clear coat of resin, and the larger piece was completed using tinted resin. I do have an Lifetime Beginner Online Resin Course "Zen Disk" (50% Off Sale price Link) on creating an art piece on Aluminum disk, but you always try it on a canvas or one of these liquid panels. 

The Finished Piece, is hanging at the Footlights Theatre in Falmouth Maine.  It will be displayed there with a number of other Alcohol Ink, Resin, and Oils. 

The show "Water Reflections" will be hanging over the Summer Months.

Having so much fun with my home made blending solution!

Funny when I was younger I felt as though I needed to PROVE that I was a "REAL" artist by showing that I could draw or paint something more realistic. But now that I'm older and wiser (wink wink) I realize how silly I was being - Art is Art! You will have those that will follow your work, because first of all you like it and secondly - they like it. You will not please everyone and your art will not please everyone. 

My true passion has always been more abstract. I often bounce back and forth, and because a number of my clients love Seascapes, landscapes and pet portraits, I still do it all. But whenever I feel the need to paint for myself, I tend to revert back to my creative emotional side and express my inner self.

Life is too short not to do what you love. So here's a tip from a fellow artist....do what you love and be who you are.

I've posted the referral links before for those of you that are interested in Mineral Paper in place of Yupo. It's made from Rocks and still has that glossy surface like Yupo but is a bit thinner and much less expensive! When you spray to seal it just know that it will tend to buckle but it will flatten back out once it's dry and has been taped down when matted or framed. 

Decisions on abstracts - Which way is UP?

Always the hard part with abstract paintings, which way is up? Tell us your ideas on this. I've numbered the options for you to choose, just leave a comment below with your ideas.

As an artist do you make the decision on your contemporary art or let your client? Do you sign yours?

Option 2 - These are all from the same painting. I love the gold in here but also the softness around the edges and the contrast between the two. 

Or as a art collector would you prefer to not have the artist sign the work on the front so you can choose to display it the way you see it? 

Option 3 - Some pieces are cropped and can easily be matted to a smaller 8x10" Frame.

To create this painting I used the Masters Airbrush again along with the Watercolor Pens filled with my own home made Alcohol Ink blending solution. 

Trying Out New Fluid Pouring Techniques

Back to my abstract side, this is my favorite type of creative painting I get to let loose!

Here I'm trying out a new technique using acrylic paints.

This is a fluid pour. I mixed up the colors of paint in a cup, added some acrylic medium and a little water - sorry no exact measurements (I'm like this when I bake too). Once the colors are poured I added some more layers of color and using Isoproply alcohol in a spray bottle to create more texture. I'm waiting for them to dry at the moment.

These are all on a size 8x8" clayboard.

 I will decide if they need a coat of resin on top.

I love the cells an lace affects I created by playing with different weights of paints and 

other additives.

Went to the other side of my brain today for a abstract version of inks. It's been a while since I haven't painted a seascape, landscape or animals. Quite freeing, experimental, and fun!

I had so much fun today working on this abstract painting - just going with the flow. I find the creative abstracts the most fun to paint. Abstracts are something I've been working with long before I started painting with watercolors back in 2007.

My mother is a very detailed artist and I've learned to paint more realistic in my approach now, but I have to admit as much as I enjoy the landscapes, seascapes, pets, animals...abstract's will always tug at my soul.

This picture gives you a better idea of the size. I really need to pick up one of the large floor easels that will hold these larger canvases. Hey maybe if my hubby reads this it'll give him a great idea for my birthday in April!

 My little 15 pound Havanese Primm managed to get herself into my picture with her little stuffed animal rabbit. She's so darn cute.

Since Valentines day is fast approaching I though a romantic painting would be appropriate for today. This romantic little couple is having a kiss in the rain under the umbrella...it's quite abstract, but you can still make them out? My husband asked if it was a jelly fish LOL.

I tried for a more realistic looking Peacock this time! I really like how this one turned out. Somehow I  managed to keep my style a little loose but with some details in the face.

This time I used a pencil instead of an ink pen to draw  out the basic shape of the peacock bird. I learned on my last piece that the pen ink will run when the alcohol touches it....should have seen that one coming!

You may also be wondering what all the paint dots are underneath the bird. I made myself a ink chart. This is a great way to help determine your color choices! I can see them laid out in front of me before I drop them onto the Yupo paper. 

The colors are not exactly as they are on the labels. Well, they may have started that way but inks are messy and before long most of the labels are covered with ink making it hard to tell! Before I would pick up any old blue and go with it!

I started out by painting the background first, then added the layers of color over once it dried.

I'm still planning on doing a video demo in February....so if you have never tried AI you can see a few tips that I've learned from trial and error.

I love painting dragonfly's...the inks gave it such a magical effect I think!

Used a bit of black ink pen on the wings. Love this blog post I found on these amazing creatures.
