Want to feel more creative in your studio? Try setting up zones.

Want to feel more creative in your studio? Try setting up zones.

When I moved into a bigger Victorian studio space this year, I realized I needed structure — or I’d just end up overwhelmed!

I created 3 simple zones:
🎥 Filming & Computer Area (for teaching classes)
📝 Walking Desk (for brainstorming + planning)
🎨 Painting Space (near the best natural light)

Having separate areas helped me:

✔️ Focus faster
✔️ Stay more organized
✔️ Feel more inspired to create

Even if you have a small space, setting up “zones” (even just mentally!) can be a game changer.

One helpful course I recommend: Creating a Creative Space That Works for You on Skillshare.

How is your studio set up? I'd love to hear!

After a restful 4th of July week up to Camp I'm ready to create. I found some lovely Birch Bark during a walk in the Maine woods. Original Ref Photo - by Shelby Crouse

Started out with a light sketch from the original photograph above.

I am using Winsor and Newton Water Mixable Oil Paints, and I love them. They dry a lot faster than traditional Oils and they clean up with water when wet.
I added the sky first, then blocked in the water and the island.

The filled in the Rock section below.

Then came all the details - the light wasn't as bright here, so I snapped a photo
of the finished piece under the light.

The Finished Piece - so much brighter!

Trying Out New Fluid Pouring Techniques

Back to my abstract side, this is my favorite type of creative painting I get to let loose!
Here I'm trying out a new technique using acrylic paints.

This is a fluid pour. I mixed up the colors of paint in a cup, added some acrylic medium and a little water - sorry no exact measurements (I'm like this when I bake too). Once the colors are poured I added some more layers of color and using Isoproply alcohol in a spray bottle to create more texture. I'm waiting for them to dry at the moment.

These are all on a size 8x8" clayboard.

I will decide if they need a coat of resin on top.

I love the cells an lace affects I created by playing with different weights of paints and
other additives.

September 2015 Thirty Paintings in 30 Days Collage

Thanks for putting up with all my posts!!!
I just wanted to Thank you for all the likes, share's and support during my 30 day challenge. It's not an easy task finishing a painting daily and you make it so enjoyable for me to post each day with all of your encouragement and sweet comments. I think I look forward to those more than you know! The old saying see it say it! It really means the world to me that my art can make you FEEL something when you look at it.
I'm really happy to share that I've sold over 9 of the thirty paintings already - THANK YOU!!! The rest will be heading to my retailer shops and venues. I've posted them on etsy too - although it's an accounting nightmare once they head out to the shops, so I may be pulling some of them off as they go out.
I will continue to paint daily - but without the added stress of having to complete it!
smile emoticon The holidays are coming and it's the perfect time as an artist to have stock!
Hope to do it all again in January!

UPDATE - SOLD Thirty Paintings in 30 Days - Day Thirty

Original Mini Painting 4x6" Mat

SOLD

Maine's second oldest and the tallest Lighthouse, and it is said to be haunted, yikes!
It's located on Seguin Island right off the Kennebeck River.

Well today's the last day of the 30 in 30 challenge! Ok, I'll admit it....I wasn't ready to do the challenge right after the holiday's but it's always a great way for me to re-focus on painting everyday.  I didn't complete one a day like in the past challenges - but I came pretty close. I'll be posting a collage of them tomorrow.

I've been holding a number of workshops and classes and getting ready to re-stock my prints and card orders for retailers, so I'm feeling really accomplished, plus I had a terrific sales month.

Can't wait to do it again in September!

Thirty Paintings in 30 Days - Day Ten

Off on to day two of the pet portraits with oils - this is "DUKE" He has a lot of nooks and crannies, aka little folds in his fur, another bit of a challenge for me with oils!

I've been meaning to paint Duke for years now, he's our dog Primm's best friend up to camp at Jo Mary Lake, in the Northern Maine woods. They would blissfully play and run around like two crazy kids and Primm always loved Dukes food much better than hers, although she would ultimately end up with the other kind of RUNS every time she snuck over and managed to eat, not just one...but the entire whole bowl if she could get away with it.

We miss it terribly up to Jo Mary, it was filled with our family and a number of fantastically fun and sweet people. But it was a three hour drive one way on the weekends and since we purchased our new small home with the water view we decided not to head back there last year. It's bitter sweet.

"I'll Follow You" - A True Creative Piece

"I'll Follow You"

Wasn't sure where I was heading with this one - it's a true creative oil piece. Found myself working on the background days ago and then sat with it for many more before deciding what to do with it.

Even as I painted I had no plan...just knew there were more Islands and reflections to come.

My hubby called this one EPIC - And that's a compliment! Where does this one bring you?

My son snapped a picture of me carrying it to my 3 season room to dry! Give's you a good idea of the size.

I called this painting "I'll Follow You" - because that's what I found myself doing as I painted. I followed the brush and my feelings and it slowly appeared on my canvas.

Have a great day - and thanks for stopping by my Blog!
