Painting A Pet Portrait in Watercolors and Gouache - Husky Dog
"Mason"
Husky Dog
Commission Pet Portrait
10x10" Watercolor/Gouache
I have completed a number of Pet portraits, but these blue eyes are one of my favorites.
Here's a little glimpse of my progress along the way.
I start with the eye's and nose, and then light washes around the fur and ears. Once those are dry I build upon those washes and darken them. The final touches are the layers and layers with a fine brush detailing in all the fur.
One of my go to supplies while painting is the OttLite with the little magnify glass, it gives of great natural lighting and I can see all the little fur strokes on my pet portraits, although I do use this light for all my paintings! I'll post a link for the light down below for you.
For "Mason" the husky I only used 2 brushes. A number 1 Arists water colour sable rigger brush by Winsor and Newton and a fine liner brush.
Below is the original reference photograph of Mason that the client emailed to me.
He's a beautiful Husky don't you think!

Challenge accepted ~ Re-creating an Oil Painting with Watercolors!
I had a lot of fun attempting to re-create my original Oil painting from last week with watercolors!
24"x24" Oil on Gallery wrapped Canvas
"On The Rocks"
$650
Watercolor - 11x14"
"On The Rocks II"
"On The Rocks II"
The original Oil painting rocks were created using a palette knife and I was able to get a lot of
depth with the using black, but with watercolors it was duller an needed more details, so I added the
yellow ochre, and Titanium white (gouache) and worked in some dry brushing.

How long does it take you to paint at Custom Pet Portrait?
One of my favorite subjects to paint are pet portraits. This is a commission painting I just finished of Mason, he's a beautiful looking husky don't you think!
It's always interesting when I just start out how much the paintings change during the whole detailing process, I've shared some steps during my painting process below.
People always ask me how long does it take to paint a pet and you know, it really varies. I spend an absorbament amount of time on the details once the basic shape is in. I start and stop on a painting throughout the day, but find that once I'm "INTO" the painting it's hard for me to NOT keep working for hours on end until I'm happy with a section.
That being said....I've learned along the way that when you are frustrated with a section or piece of your painting, it's best to walk away. Many times after I let my eyes and mind rest, I come back and spot that one little problem area right away.
Sometimes it will take me weeks to complete a painting and other times things just go smoothly and I'll accomplish it in days. Each painting varies and in some cases what I think will be easy...turns out to be harder than expected.
So I guess to answer the question - How long does it take me? Well the answer is...I never know. Because like every person and pet - each painting is different and takes on a life of it's own.

Simplicity - Materials For 30 Paintings in 30 Days
My Art space has not officially been set up since moving into our TINY HOME! Cough cough.. trying not to panic here for the next 30 days of STRAIGHT painting!
My thought? Well, I've decided to keep things um, "SIMPLE"! I'm going off our new way of thinking since....DUM DUM DUM...."THE DOWNSIZE" (Said slowly and in a deep voice).
If I move over the computer screen, it should give me enough room to work some magic! But.... if not, then the handy dandy kitchen table is right next to me...I'll just roll on over.
Materials List: I've added the links to Amazon for you.

Maine River Rocks - 8x8" On clayboard
Maine River Rocks
My first step was to transfer my drawing to the Clayboard then I layered a first wash on the rocks. Had fun with the different colors.
After the first wash of colors were down I added in a few more layers of glazes and added some texture.
Last step was to paint in the dark background and then add a water wash over the top with white goauche to give them an appearance of being underwater.

Painting Number 38 "Autumn Reflections"
"Autumn Reflections"
11 x 14 Watercolor/Gouache on 140 Arches Cold Press
I wanted to step out side of my comfort zone with a few larger paintings this year and Autumn reflections was a challenge for me. Not only is the size larger than my norm, but there is a lot going on in this one. When I first looked at the photograph I had no idea how difficult it would be to achieve the look I wanted. Took me longer than what was anticipated, but very happy with the outcome.
My cousin Valerie sent me the original photograph via Facebook. She thought it might be something that I would enjoy painting - Thanks Valerie....you were so right! I love it when folks send me interesting pictures!
ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH BY CANDI
So here's the original photograph taken by Candi at the Tower Hill Botanic Garden in Boylston, MA. She certainly has an eye! This is just so cool! Love the warm reflections in the water. You can see the leaves drifting along..no care in the world.
I'm off to drift along and enjoy my family time.......enjoy your weekend everyone!

Daily Painting #37 - Northern Lights Watercolor
"Northern Lights"
5 x 7 Watercolor/Gouache on 140 Arches Cold Press
It's a long haul from my 30 day challenge were I completed a painting a day, but at least I am painting each day! I've been working on a few bigger pieces that you may have seen if you follow me on the Kellie Lynn Art Facebook Page.
Today's continuing work is of a leaf in the water. When I was first sent the picture from Valerie (thank you), I thought how pretty it was. Valerie sent it to me via email thinking that I may be interested in painting it...and I was like - OH YAY! Now, um....not so much! It's a lot of frig-in details!
That being said, it is a really good challenge for me. My eyes are going a bit crossed, but I think the end result will be beautiful. Stop over to check it out if you have the chance!
Happy Painting
